1. Overview
SmartMedia is a WordPress plugin that converts images to WebP format and uses AI to generate SEO-optimised filenames, alt text, and titles. This privacy policy explains what data is processed when you install and use the plugin on your WordPress site.
SmartMedia does not collect, store, or share any personally identifiable information about your website visitors. All data processing described below relates to you as the site administrator using the plugin.
2. Data processed by the plugin
When you use SmartMedia to process an image, the following data is sent to our AI relay server:
- The image file (resized and converted to WebP before transmission)
- Optional context fields you fill in, such as a page title, target keyword, or business description
- Your WordPress site URL (sent as part of the HTTP request headers)
No visitor data, browsing behaviour, or personal information about your site's users is transmitted.
3. AI relay server
The plugin communicates with a relay server operated by Sebastiaan Castenmiller at relay.smartmedia.blu8print.com. This relay acts as an intermediary between your WordPress installation and an AI model provider (OpenRouter).
The relay server:
- Receives your image and optional context
- Forwards them to the AI model provider for analysis
- Returns the generated metadata (filename, alt text, title) to your WordPress site
- Does not store your images or context data after processing is complete
- Logs only request timestamps and licence status for rate-limiting and abuse prevention
The relay server is hosted in the European Union.
4. AI model provider (OpenRouter)
Image analysis is performed via OpenRouter, a third-party AI model routing service. When your image is analysed:
- The image and context are temporarily processed by an AI language model
- OpenRouter's own privacy policy applies to this processing
- Images are not used to train AI models (as per OpenRouter's data policy)
5. Data stored on your WordPress site
SmartMedia stores the following data in your WordPress database:
- The AI-generated alt text, title, and filename, saved as standard WordPress media metadata
- Your plugin settings (context defaults, if configured)
This data never leaves your WordPress installation except as described in sections 3 and 4 above.
6. Cookies and tracking
SmartMedia does not set any cookies and does not include any tracking pixels, analytics scripts, or third-party embeds on your website's front end. The plugin operates entirely within wp-admin.
7. GDPR compliance
SmartMedia is designed with data minimisation in mind. The legal basis for processing image data is legitimate interest — specifically, the need to generate accurate SEO metadata for your images.
If you are subject to GDPR, you should be aware that:
- Images you upload may contain personal data (e.g. photos of people)
- These images are temporarily transmitted to the relay and AI provider as described above
- You are responsible for ensuring you have the right to process and transmit any images used with this plugin
8. Data retention
The relay server retains minimal request logs (timestamp, licence tier, response status) for up to 30 days for debugging and abuse prevention. No image content is retained after the API response is returned.
9. Your rights
You have the right to:
- Request information about what data is held about you
- Request deletion of any stored data
- Object to processing
To exercise these rights, please contact us at the email address below.
10. Children's privacy
SmartMedia is a developer tool intended for website administrators. It is not directed at children under the age of 13 and we do not knowingly process data from children.
11. Changes to this policy
We may update this privacy policy from time to time. The date at the top of this page reflects the most recent revision. Continued use of the plugin after changes are published constitutes acceptance of the updated policy.
